Joshua, Nicole Fast & their son Malakai
Malakai and Nicole have a rare genetic disorder called myotonic dystrophy. This does not affect Nicole’s day to day life much besides being fatigued more than most. Malakai, on the other hand, has a more severe form as well as cerebral palsy. This affects his general muscle state, making him not strong enough at 6 years old to even hold up his own body weight. This makes him very floppy, but he is one of the happiest kids you with ever meet.

I Joshua have worked on and off with youth for over 8 years. Most recently with Youth for Christ Victoria, where I ran Motivational Media. My brother and I grew up with 2 good friends, twins in fact. One of these twins has cerebral palsy. I learned a lot from growing up with this family. Often times we look at others that have special needs and we may think of them as a drain on society or we ask God why would you let this person suffer. I have learned that suffering teaches all of us lessons that can not be learned any other way. Not only does it teach people closes to the suffering, but it also teaches others how to serve. Families who have a family member who has faced or faces challenges are forever changed. I have found that the old adage, whatever does not kill you, only makes you stronger, can be true when it comes to suffering. But this can not be accomplished alone.
My unique experience has driven me to create Priceless Youth Ministry. The support I have received from my local church, as well as my faith, were irreplaceable when walking through Malakai’s birth and the first 4 1/2 months of his life in the hospital. My goal is to help other families find support and teach others how special these children are. One of my favorite quotes from C.S. Lewis is. “We can ignore even pleasure. But pain insists upon being attended to. God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world.”
My goal is to create opportunities for people to encounter God through fellowship, worship, and the teaching of God’s Word. Priceless youth ministry is not necessarily about creating a new ministry but ensuring that existing ministries are accessible and welcoming to people of all abilities..
